About the Shared Service Initiative

The Shared Service Initiative commenced in 2002, and has already resulted in a number of benefits to the Queensland Government.

The Shared Service Initiative has a vision of partnering in corporate services to support and connect Government. This vision is being achieved by innovating and standardising corporate services policies, practices and systems, using a model that supports Government business, and effectively using skills and resources.

The Initiative centralises services that have traditionally been carried out within each state government agency. These services include:

As part of the streamlining process, these services are now provided by three shared service providers who deliver these services across the whole Queensland Government. Approximately 5,000 corporate service professionals now work within these new shared service providers. Each shared service provider services a cluster of agencies.

The role of technology

The Initiative involves substantial automation of traditionally manual processes in order to maximise efficiency.  CorpTech, a technology centre of skill, provides the corporate applications and systems support to these service providers and the Shared Service Initiative Policy and Program Office.

The impact of the Shared Service Initiative

The Shared Service Initiative impacts on all Queensland Government departments and their staff, as either providers or clients of corporate services. The implementation of shared corporate services is changing how these services are delivered across the Queensland public sector.

It is recognised that corporate services staff in the Queensland Government are skilled and deliver a high standard of service. The introduction of shared services is about streamlining work processes to gain efficiencies and position the Government to more effectively respond to changing demands.  The Shared Service Initiative is a collaborative effort across the sector. It is guided by the Shared Service Initiative Policy and Program Office and is being implemented in partnership with CorpTech, shared service providers and their client agencies.
